MLC hosted an International Literacy Day P0tluck Lunch at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Chatham. There were 49 people present representing partners in literacy, new tutors and students. We presented our 8 new tutors with their certificates from Laubach Literacy New Brunswick.
Our guest speakers were from Autism Miramichi, Ms. Jennifer Daley and Ms. Debbie MacGregor spoke on what`s happening with the new Book Nook and other new services they have implemented recently.
Ms. Sandra Bunting, Executive Director of Miramichi Regional Multicultural Association (MRMA) also spoke on some of the changes and new additions to their program for newcomers to Miramichi.
Other organizations who shared news of their organizations were Ms. Kim Henderson of Schizophrenia Miramichi, who shared an update on Mental Health.
Ms. Isabella Imperatori, Coordinator of the Community Inclusion Network Region 7, introduced herself and outlined what CIN was about. Ms. Elizabeth Copeland from KDS Theatre Productions, an educator with many years of experience with kids spoke on the different programs they have.
Barb Lake-Lane told all gathered about Miramichi Literacy Council’s (MLC) recent successes with tutoring English as a Second Language (ESL) in partnership with Miramichi Multicultural and the Cooking to Learn Program in partnership with Miramichi Adult Learning Inc. (MALI), Schizophrenia Miramichi, Rotary Club of Newcastle and Healthy and Inclusive Communities.
The potluck buffet had food from all different cultures, including Sushi, a Taco Casserole and Spicy Potato Pancakes. There were also delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Thank you everyone for making this a successful event.
